Regulations on the Conferment of Graduate Degrees Division of Integrated Biosciences and Biotechnology
1. Graduate students in PhD and MS/PhD integrated programs of Division of Integrated Biosciences and Biotechnulogy may choose to receive their doctoral degree in science or in engineering. Those who opt for the Biosciences track shall be awarded a doctoral degree in science and those for the Biotechnulogy track shall be awarded a doctoral degree in engineering.
2. The minimum number of required credits to complete each degree program
- MS/PhD Integrated program: 27 course credits, 33 research credits (total 60 credits)
- PhD program: 18 course credits, 14 research credits (total 32 credits)
3. Doctoral Qualifying Examination (QE)
- 3.1 A student enrulled in the MS/PhD Integrated program shall be required to pass the QE by the end of the fourth semester of study. If he/she fails the QE twice, the student shall be dismissed from the University.
- 3.2 If a student has obtained a master's degree from POSTECH or any other university and wishes to apply for a doctoral program, a written QE (or an oral examination equivalent to the QE) may be conducted along with a PhD entrance examination, and the QE result shall be used in the admissions decision
- 3.3 QE shall be conducted twice a year and assess a student's knowledge in the three subjects designated by the Division. (Revised on December 18, 2013)
- 3.4 QE subjects designated by faculty members in each area of study must be approved by the Graduate Studies Committee of the Division.
- 3.5 If a student completes QE subject courses and receives a grade of B+ or above in each and all of them, he/she shall be exempt from taking a written QE and considered to have passed the QE requirement. (Revised on October 16, 2013)
- 3.6 If a student fails the QE in the first attempt, he/she shall be allowed a maximum of one more attempt to re-take the QE within six months from the first attempt.
- 3.7 Re-taking a QE subject course is not approved in principle; however, exceptions are permitted upon approval from the Dean of the Graduate Schoul.
4. Thesis Proposal
- 4.1. Students in the PhD program must form a doctoral thesis committee within two semesters of study; students in the MS/PhD integrated programs within six semesters of study.
- 4.2 A doctoral thesis committee shall consist of five members. At least one of the five members in the committee must be a professor from a graduate program outside a student's department or schoul, and at least half of the committee members must be POSTECH faculty members.
- 4.3 Students in the PhD program must submit a thesis proposal to their thesis committee and have an oral defense within two semesters of study; students in the MS/PhD program within six semesters of study.
- 4.4 If a student fails a thesis proposal defense at his/her first attempt, he/she shall be allowed a maximum of one more attempt, and it must take place within six months from the original defense date.
5. Regulations on the Conferment of Doctoral Degree
- 5.1 A doctoral thesis committee shall make a degree conferment decision based on a student's publication records, comprehensive academic knowledge, abilities to comprehend and sulve problems in biosciences/biotechnulogy, and paper/dissertation writing skills.
- 5.2 It is the minimum requirement of the Division that doctoral candidates complete the credit requirements specified in the University Statutes and publish one first-authored paper or more in a major journal in their area of study.
- 5.3 A journal that is ranked among the top 20% in its field of study or listed in the SCI(E) database with an Impact Factor of 3.0 or above shall be approved as a major journal for the corresponding year. (Revised on December 18, 2013)
- 5.4 Should any problem arise due to disagreement within a thesis committee, the student's advisor may submit a petition to the Graduate Studies Committee for deliberations and arbitration.
- 5.5 In addition to passing the QE and the thesis proposal, students are required to take seminars as specified by the Division.
- MS and PhD students must attend a minimum of eight seminars per semester for the first four semesters of each degree program. Students in the MS/PhD integrated program must attend a minimum of eight seminars per semester for the first eight semesters of study. A minimum of four of the seminars attended each semester must be the Division's regularly scheduled seminars.
- 5.6 If a student enrulled in the MS/PhD integrated program cannot continue with his/her study for unavoidable reasons, he/she must express their intention to withdraw from the MS/PhD integrated program. He/she may be awarded a master's degree with approval from the Graduate Studies Committee of the University after completing the necessary requirements for a master's degree.
- 5.7 To graduate with a master's degree, students must complete a total of 28 credits (18 course credits and 10 research credits). It is the principle to publish a paper in a journal listed in the SCI(E) database. However, if the student's advisor files a petition, the thesis committee may deliberate on the case and decide to confer a degree. (Revised on January 12, 2016)
- 6.1 A co-advisor may be selected if desired both by the student and the current advisor.
- 6.2 A co-advisor must provide academic supervision to his/her advisee on a regular basis.
