Life Sciences at POSTECH are reaping in their crops of research efforts that have been evaluated as the highest in the nation. This is the result of hard work and personal sacrifice devoted by the faculty, graduate students, research staff and administrative staff from diverse areas including the departments of Life Sciences, System Bio-Dynamics, Bio-related Chemistry, Bio-related areas in Physics and Mechanical Engineering. We also owe much to the active support from the POSTECH Administration.
The 2009 WCU Program has made it possible for us to open a new Division of Integrative Biosciences and Biotechnology and invite the world class scholars from various fields from home and abroad to do their interdisciplinary research on meso-biology and biotechnology at POSTECH. The Division of Integrative Biosciences and Biotechnology aims to become a new international leader in basic life science and bio-engineering and also in training and educating graduate students to become world-class scientists who can contribute to the national economy. We made great effort to be a significant addition to POSTECH’s reputation as one of the best international research oriented universities. Our sincere endeavor enabled us to get 7 year-support from 2013 BK21 plus program (Brain Korea 21 Program for Leading Universities & Students).
Based on sequential supports of WCU and BK21 plus program we need to make another success story out of the Division of Integrative Biosciences and Biotechnology. We have the foundation, the tradition, and the mind set, which we have established since the opening of POSTECH to guide our path. The feasibility of realizing this goal is quite high, especially since life science has been selected to be one of the three research areas for POSTECH’s concentrated support.
First, teach and train future specialists who will lead the biosciences and biotechnology of tomorrow.
We will give our fullest support to produce a workforce consisting of scientists and engineers who will play leading roles in life science and bio-industries by developing the great potentials of our graduate students. To stimulate the intellectual curiosity of the students and to encourage them to explore and exchange their ideas with the current leaders in various fields, world class leading scholars will be invited from home and abroad to join the POSTECH adjunct faculty at our Division of Integrative Biosciences and Biotechnology. Our graduate students will be encouraged to present their papers at the international conferences and discuss their ideas with their colleagues from all over the world. Debate and discussion with world famous scholars, participation in international academic conferences, paper writing contests, seminars conducted in English - these are just a few examples of the many opportunities our graduate students will get to explore before they finally choose the area of their specialty that best suits their interest and ability. When they complete their graduate program successfully at our Division of Integrative Biosciences and Biotechnology, they will join the world of work as leading specialists.
Second, produce scholars with research ability of global standard.
The faculty of Integrative Biosciences and Biotechnology will be comprised of outstanding full-time professors and adjunct professors invited from the internationally renowned universities and research institutes in the United States, Australia, Sweden, Japan. Thus although our graduate students pursue their coursework in Korea at the Division of Integrative Biosciencess and Biotechnology, they will be conducting their research and experiments in the laboratories at the universities in the countries to which the invited professors originally belong. Through the lectures delivered in English and the research programs affiliated with the most advanced universities in the world, our graduate students will acquire a research capability of global standard.
Third, shift to research areas that have greater impact potentials.
Emphasis will be placed on the impact potential of research rather than simply on the number of papers published. Since a variety of research areas will be integrated in our new education policy, and especially since the graduate students at our Division of Integrative Biosciences and Biotechnology will specialize in two or more fields under the guidance of two or more academic advisors in a co-advisor system, they will be offered many opportunities to explore new academic fields and new research areas, producing revolutionary research results in life science and in bio-industries. Scientific potentials will grow in the long run as we enrich the foundation of basic science which brings a great impact on the future, and in the short run, our emphasis on industrialization will contribute to the development of the nation’s bio-industries.
